Copyright is a form of protection for intellectual property. This is a legal right that is given to the originator and has authorized others to use their information but cite their source and give the originator credit for their work. One can abuse copyright, by stating the work they found from someone else is their original work. One must cite where they viewed their information from and give the originator of the work credit. As a teacher, I would make sure the rules and regulations for citing others' work was known as a class. I have had teachers in the past that have just posted the rules but not how to cite correctly. When the teacher doesn't make a serious note on the matter it is up to the student to find out on their own how to cite properly. This leads to failure sometimes. I would make sure the students in my classroom knew how to cite properly as a class, explain the seriousness of copyright and if they fail to follow the directions, I as a teacher would take the initiative to speak to the parents or principal on how the certain student can improve. I would also implement the development of their own work and having half the class cite the other students' work and vs versus.
Cyberbullying- Cyberbullying is a huge problem in almost every single school. It is a form of bullying online. Social media spreads fast and rumors or being bullied can spread even faster with the use/abuse of social media. There are four ways I can think of as a teacher to stop cyberbullying within my classroom:
1) Teach digital citizenship: Hold class discussions about cyberbullying and make it aware to all my students. I could share statistics so the students understand the severity of cyberbullying. Make it known the consequences of cyberbullying as well.
2) Have a connection with the parents: If my relationship with the parents is good, I would be able to contact the parents if I see any forms of cyberbullying starting or already have started. Of course, the parents have decisions based on the consequences outside of the school setting, but as long as there is good communication between parent-teacher we would be able to diminish the issue fairly quickly.
3) Report it: Ignoring cyberbullying allows the abuse to continue. There will be a 0 tolerance for bullying within my classroom.
4) Empower Student Leaders: Teachers and administration can help stop bullying, but the students listen to other students more! By empowering student leaders within my classroom, they can be my eyes and ears when I am not around and know the standards I hold within my classroom and with them, as student leaders.
Student Privacy- A teacher of a classroom must understand 3 main points when discussing protecting student privacy.
-The first main point is to understand the K-12 student data (de-identified data vs aggregate data.) There are many different types of data that is collected within the classroom over a school year period and it is the teacher's responsibility to understand the certain data being processed and who should have access to it.
-The second main point is to understand the Privacy Laws that impact K-12. FERPA, PPRA, COPPA, AND HIPAA are all acts that help protect students' privacy within their K-12 educational years. The teacher needs to be aware of these laws, and be able to abide by these laws.
-The third main point is to follow data security best practices. The teacher must collaborate securely, use end-to-end encryption, and encourage user adoption. The importance of data security best practices and encryption technologies for ensuring that the grades K-12 students' data would be protected.

I loved reading your blog entry! I wish I read it before doing the newsletter for the tip about the permission slip! I also said cyber bullying was one of the biggest issues, but not student privacy. After reading your explanations for student privacy I can see just how serious of an issue it is.
