ELA technology standards are reflecting both the difficulty of language use in a society that is using technology and the different media and the technologies used to communicate. These is the skills and knowledge captured by these standards to help prepare students for life outside the classroom. These can include critical thinking and the ability to read texts in a way that would help the students learn and understand the complex works of literature. I chose 2nd grade for the ELA standards and Technology Matrix. One of the standards for 2nd grade is Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate an understanding of its characters, setting, or plot.
To me, this means having my students create some form of a storybook. While making a storybook my students will be able to understand and demonstrate the characters, setting, and plot while using technology. I do feel prepared to implement this standard based on my current skill set. I feel confident in teaching my students how to read a piece of literature and transfer it to an online storybook while dissecting the components of the study.
For Grade 2, I chose Science in the Tool Kit. I chose SC.2.E.6.1. which is recognizing that the Earth is made up of rocks and that rocks come in many different shapes and sizes. I would use this to make a lesson plan to make sure my students know that the Earth is made up of rocks and that the rocks come in many different sizes. I would do a visual lecture that is hands-on
A new skill I acquired from the Newsletter Design assignment was forming columns and forming a hyperlink to a website. These skills were important to do in the newsletter and made the newsletter better. To improve my newsletter in the future, I would add more information and word art to capture the parent's eyes. The skills I learned can definitely be used in my future by organizing my notes, and being able to make a newsletter/poster in the future. Once you're comfortable with Word, you can use it in so many different ways.
Hi Melissa! It was great reading your third blog entry. I ended up selecting a different grade and tool kit, so it was interesting to read your point of view for your second graders. I think you would be well prepared to implement these standards and tool kits to your students.
